Christian Nørgaard, the captain of Brentford, recently shared in an interview with TV2 Sport that he aspires to return to his former club, Brøndby IF, in the summer of 2027.
At 31 years of age, Nørgaard received a two-year contract extension last week following a remarkable season, where he emerged as one of Thomas Frank’s pivotal players for the Danish side.
As he approaches the latter stages of his career, Nørgaard has already laid out plans for himself and his family once his time at Brentford comes to a close.
“By the summer of 2027, I will be 33, and hopefully, I’ll still be in good physical shape. I’m actively working on extending my career and playing at the highest level possible. Therefore, I can easily envision myself returning home, making an impact, and finishing my career at Brøndby. That’s my ideal scenario, if the timing aligns. But it also hinges on Brøndby,” stated Nørgaard, who, alongside his wife, purchased a home in Rungsted, near Copenhagen, in 2024.
With his current contract expiring this summer, Nørgaard revealed that he received numerous offers from prominent clubs and spent considerable time weighing his options about whether to leave Brentford for the opportunity to compete in the Champions League or to remain in London, where he, alongside partner Josefine Barsoe and their three sons, find great happiness.
“After signing, I did have that sense of: ‘What could have been, or are we missing out on an adventure?’ Nørgaard reflected, adding:
“Had I chosen a major club in Portugal, a top-five club in Spain, or another big name in Italy, it would probably have stung even more because we’d have to leave behind what we’ve built here, and I would be giving up my role within the squad.
“I admit, stepping out of my comfort zone by joining a new locker room, learning a new language, taking on a different responsibility, and adapting to a new coach isn’t exactly daunting for me. These are challenges I embrace wholeheartedly, but I’m far too content right now to gamble on that,” Nørgaard concluded in the interview.
Nørgaard will return to action with Brentford when they take on Newcastle away this Wednesday.
