Brazil has the opportunity to silence their critics by breaking their winless streak against long-time rivals Argentina, said coach Dorival Jr as they prepare for their World Cup qualifying match in Buenos Aires on Tuesday.
The Selecao have not triumphed over the reigning world champions for the past six years, with their winless run in Argentina extending to 16 years.
However, following a late 2-1 victory against Colombia on Thursday – a match that marked Brazil’s return to form after a series of draws – Dorival has expressed confidence that Tuesday’s clash could be the perfect stage for his team to demonstrate their capabilities.
“We are up against the reigning champions of the world and South America, the most successful side globally in recent times. Our aim is to win, to showcase our best football, and to claim victory on their turf,” Dorival stated during a press conference on Monday.
“We live in a nation that thrives on criticism, which is unfortunate, but that’s my perspective. We often lack the respect that is due. But as time passes, everyone finds their place.
“I’m well aware of how football functions, and I accept the challenges that come with pressure. I believe in hard work, commitment, respect, and seriousness in our efforts. I’ve overseen the national team for 15 matches now. Hold me accountable for my work when the time is right.”

The last time Brazil secured a win in Argentina was back in 2009 when they claimed a 3-1 victory in Santa Fe. Since their 2-0 win in the Copa America semi-final in 2019, Brazil has suffered three defeats in their last four encounters with Argentina, all finishing 1-0.
Under Dorival’s management, Brazil has managed to secure seven wins from 15 matches since he took charge in early 2024, following a year in which the team was guided by two caretaker coaches while the Brazilian Football Association attempted to entice Italian Carlo Ancelotti from Real Madrid.
The triumph over Colombia has propelled Brazil into third place in the South American qualifiers, amassing 21 points, just one point behind second-placed Ecuador and seven points shy of leaders Argentina.
The top six teams will qualify directly for the 2026 World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada.
