Brad Fittler firmly believes that Kalyn Ponga ought to be permitted to represent the Kiwis, advocating for a significant reform of the representative eligibility rules.
Currently, players cannot compete in the State of Origin series while also representing a tier-one nation other than Australia, which includes only New Zealand and England.
In recent times, however, Tonga has made impressive strides, reaching the finals of the Pacific Championships last year, while Samoa featured in the World Cup final in 2022.

The success of these nations has sparked ongoing discussions about eligibility, which intensified following reports last weekend indicating that Ponga was considering making himself available for New Zealand.
At 26 years of age, Ponga was born in Western Australia, with parents from New Zealand, and has previously played for the Maori All Stars.
While he hasn’t officially stated his intentions regarding a switch in allegiance, Ponga has not yet made an appearance for the Kangaroos, which means he could still potentially make the change.

When questioned about whether he should be allowed to represent both the Maroons and the Kiwis, Fittler, a former NSW coach, expressed full support for the idea.
“Definitely, absolutely,” he stated on Nine’s Freddy and The Eighth.
“The sooner they address the eligibility issue, the better.”
Tonga made it to the final last year, and they can still participate in State of Origin because they are classified as a tier two nation. Samoa also reached the World Cup final a couple of years back.
“We are witnessing the Polynesian nations making significant strides, and I believe it’s crucial to reevaluate the eligibility criteria without a doubt.”
Ponga has represented Australia, but only in nines competition, before facing a perplexing snub from coach Mal Meninga at the end of 2024.

Andrew Johns, a Newcastle legend, is unaware of Ponga’s intentions but feels he would be a prime selection for Queensland this year.
“Kalyn will definitely be the fullback by a country mile,” he asserted.
“I’m not sure about his position. There were rumours last year that he wanted to play for New Zealand when he opted out of the Australian team.
“However, I haven’t discussed this with anyone.”
Ponga has been sensational at the start of the season for the Knights, guiding the team to two consecutive victories while earning the maximum of 12 Dally M votes.
