Paris Saint-Germain suffered a surprising 1-0 defeat against Botafogo in the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC), bringing their impressive six-match winning streak across all competitions to an abrupt end.
Khvicha Kvaratskhelia, who played a pivotal role in setting up PSG’s initial two goals during their previous match against Atletico Madrid, continued to pose a threat to his opponents early on. The skillful winger cut inside and attempted a curling shot towards the far corner, but John Victor managed to deny him. Moments later, he had another attempt with his left foot from a similar spot, but missed narrowly.
Botafogo looked dangerous on the counter, with Artur testing Gianluigi Donnarumma from range before the Brazilians took an unexpected lead at half-time.

Another swift counter saw Igor Jesus find space on the fringe of the box. Filled with confidence after scoring against Seattle Sounders in their previous match, he unleashed a shot that deflected off a defender, leaving Donnarumma with no chance as the ball rolled into the bottom corner. This marked the first goal PSG conceded in four matches.
Both teams squandered excellent opportunities at the start of the second half, with Lucas Beraldo’s close-range header brilliantly saved by John, while Jefferson Savarino directed his header straight at Donnarumma in a promising position.
As expected, PSG regained control, and Bradley Barcola thought he had equalised with a stunning shot into the top corner, only to be ruled offside.

Despite applying the pressure, PSG managed to muster only a single shot on target during the second half and were unable to find the equaliser. This victory marked Botafogo’s fifth consecutive win in all competitions and one of the most remarkable in their history. The outcome leaves Group B teetering on the edge, with Botafogo ahead of European heavyweights PSG and Atlético Madrid as the final round of group matches approaches.
