In their opening match at the FIFA Club World Cup (CWC), Botafogo secured a 2-1 victory against a determined Seattle Sounders team at Lumen Field, thanks to two first-half goals.
Despite being deemed underdogs, the Sounders appeared relaxed in the initial stages of the match, although that early confidence was short-lived. It took Botafogo approximately 10 minutes to find their rhythm, during which they started to pressure Stefan Frei. The experienced Seattle goalkeeper was called into action to deny a header from Igor Jesus and a subsequent volley from Alex Telles prior to the 15-minute mark.
The Sounders attempted to respond through Jesus Ferreira, who had a shot go wide, but struggled to devise any threatening plays against Botafogo’s defence.
As the game unfolded, it became evident that the Sounders were retreating deeper into their half, creating space for Botafogo, who capitalised on a significant error to score the opening goal.
After Nouhou Tolo fouled Artur, a free kick was awarded, leading to Telles assisting Jair Cunha, who netted his first professional goal with a powerful header from close range.
In a bid to regain control, Seattle pushed their lines forward post-goal. However, just before half-time, Botafogo extended their lead when Vitinho’s cross found Igor Jesus, who scored with a header, handing the Copa Libertadores 2024 champions a two-goal advantage at the interval.
Emerging for the second half, the Sounders displayed a renewed spirit and a more aggressive approach, nearly getting on the scoresheet when Jackson Ragen struck from a close position.
Despite Seattle’s attempts to pin Botafogo back in their own half, a clarity of thought in the final third was lacking, hindering their ability to convert chances until the 75th minute, when Cristian Roldan headed in a goal that deflected off Igor Jesus, beating John in goal.

The final fifteen minutes were dominated by the Sounders, yet the introductions of players like Pedro de la Vega and Osaze De Rosario failed to turn the tide in their favour.
Despite creating a prime opportunity in the dying moments of the match, the Sounders were unable to secure an equaliser and succumbed to a 2-1 defeat, although their second-half performance warranted more rewards.
Botafogo will surely be pleased with the three points gained but should reflect on their second-half display, especially with notable opponents PSG and Atletico de Madrid on the horizon.
