Essendon’s season has been marred by a relentless wave of injuries affecting their key position players, and they suffered the addition of two more during last night’s match.
Despite this setback, the Bombers secured a hard-fought victory against a resilient yet inexperienced Richmond side, triumphing 81-58 in the traditional Dreamtime at the ‘G encounter.
The Tigers kept up with the Bombers for much of the match, but Essendon gained the upper hand in the final quarter in front of a crowd of 76,000.

Star midfielder Kyle Langford was taken off due to a quad injury, while key defender Zach Reid was also sidelined with hamstring discomfort during the third term. This adds to the list of significant injuries the Bombers have already faced, as highlighted by Jon Ralph.
“This is getting ridiculous. Essendon’s tall options are in tatters,” he stated on Fox Footy.
“Langford waved his arm immediately (to come off). Essendon just can’t catch a break.”
“Brad Scott must be wondering what he’s done to deserve this.”
The Dons currently find themselves without Sam Draper, Tom Edwards, Nick Bryan, Lewis Hayes, Harrison Jones, Nik Cox, Jordan Ridley, as well as Langford and Reid, straining their key position depth.
Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd expressed his concerns regarding the growing injury list.
“In just six days, they’ll have to play again at the Gabba, so the challenges keep mounting. Two vital injuries, both bookends,” Lloyd stated on 3AW.
“Given Reid’s history, it’s likely they will be cautious. As for Langford, he might be sidelined for another month.”

On a bright note, Essendon debutante Angus Clarke made a significant impact on his first outing, scoring three goals.
“He was undoubtedly the standout of the night, showcasing his football intelligence. You can see he knows the game well with every touch,” Lloyd commented.
“His disposal quality was top-notch.”
The Tigers also faced injury woes as Thomson Dow was substituted due to a knee problem, and Sam Lalor had hamstring issues later in the game.
Essendon will head to Brisbane to face the Lions at the Gabba on Thursday, while Richmond prepares to take on GWS at Engie Stadium in round 12.
