Argentina have secured their spot in the 2026 World Cup without even stepping onto the pitch on Tuesday. Bolivia’s goalless draw against Uruguay in El Alto ensured that the Albiceleste will advance to the tournament before their derby clash with Brazil, scheduled for later in the day.
With the World Cup expanding to 48 teams, the South American qualifiers now provide six direct berths, along with an additional spot for a playoff match.
Currently, Argentina sits atop the standings with 28 points from 13 matches and cannot be surpassed by Bolivia, who trails in seventh place with just 14 points from 14 games.
The reigning world champions will be making their 14th consecutive World Cup appearance, with the last tournament they missed being in 1970, which took place in Mexico and was won by Brazil.
The 2026 World Cup will be jointly hosted by the United States, Mexico, and Canada, running from 11 June to 19 July.
Teams already qualified for the 2026 World Cup:
Hosts: Canada, United States, Mexico
South America: Argentina
Asia: Iran, Japan
Oceania: New Zealand
