Benji Marshall has declined a request from the Cowboys to release his star hooker and captain, who still has a year left on his contract.
As reported by The Sydney Morning Herald, a Cowboys representative reached out to the Tigers regarding the possibility of signing Api Koroisau to fill the gap left by the Roosters-bound Reece Robson in 2026.
The publication indicated that the Cowboys believed that letting Koroisau go would create salary cap space to facilitate the re-signing of Lachlan Galvin.
However, the Tigers and Marshall were firm in their response.
“Why would we let a world-class hooker leave 12 months ahead of time?” Marshall remarked.
“We have absolutely no interest in allowing him to go, none whatsoever. And that is definitely not happening while I’m at the helm as coach.”

“Api is our top leader in the team, which is why he wears the captain’s armband,” Marshall stated.
He emphasised that retaining Koroisau is vital for the growth of emerging star Tallyn Da Silva, who has recently extended his contract.
“Tallyn is in the lucky situation of learning from one of the best in the sport, which allows him to develop at his own pace,” the coach noted.

“Generally, hookers don’t fully develop until they’re around 24 or 25, so there’s no rush for him. Tallyn will have the chance to refine his game, gradually increase his playing time, and perhaps someday take over from Api. But that’s in the future.
“I want what’s best for the club, and what’s best is keeping Api here.”
The Tigers are set to face the Knights in Newcastle this Sunday.
