Carlton’s aspirations for finals have taken a significant blow, following a 50-point drubbing by the Power at Adelaide Oval on Thursday night.
In desperate need of a victory to remain in contention for a top-eight finish, the Blues were decisively outclassed, succumbing to a scoreline of 16.14 (110) to 8.12 (60).
The defeat follows a disappointing loss to the Kangaroos by 11 points in round 15, leading to a wave of criticism aimed at the Blues. With back-to-back losses piecing together a 6-9 record for the season, their chances of securing a spot in September are rapidly diminishing.
Northern Melbourne great David King described the performance as “ugly” for Carlton during the match.
“Honestly, I’m surprised because Carlton’s effort in recent weeks has been commendable,” King stated. “While their execution and skills may be up for critique, their commitment has consistently been there.”

Adelaide legend Mark Ricciuto also raised concerns about the players’ efforts.
“Regardless of the coaching tactics, it’s all about the players’ effort,” he remarked. “At the moment, they’re simply not meeting standards.”
Carlton managed a meagre one goal in the first half as Port Adelaide’s prominent forward Mitch Georgiades netted five goals, marking his second such performance in three weeks.
The scoreboard pain was intensified for defender Adam Saad, who was subbed out at halftime with a concussion after taking a heavy blow to the jaw during a block by rival ruckman Dante Visentini.
As Visentini sought to shepherd for Saad, his shoulder made harsh contact, although he did not leave his feet in the process.

The incident may catch the attention of match review officer Michael Christian, although many analysts believe the collision was accidental, and Visentini might evade suspension.
“You have to be cautious with these situations when a player is attempting to play the ball and suddenly turns,” remarked three-time premiership player Jack Riewoldt during commentary for Fox Footy. “I don’t perceive any malicious intent — he simply caught him in an unfortunate position. However, if you opt to bump, you have to accept the risks, and hits to the head will always draw scrutiny.”

This vital victory for Port Adelaide keeps their finals aspirations alive as they rise to 10th place on the ladder.
Ahead of the match, Power coach Ken Hinkley made bold changes, implementing four alterations to his line-up.
Meanwhile, Blues coach Michael Voss finds himself under increasing pressure, despite being contracted for the next season. AFL great Buddy Franklin has called for the Blues to part ways with Voss immediately, while Essendon legend Matthew Lloyd expects him to complete the remainder of the season in his role.
