Bayern Munich will be without Alphonso Davies for a crucial part of the season. The left-back sustained a ruptured cruciate ligament while representing the Canadian national team, and Dayot Upamecano has also been diagnosed with loose bodies in his left knee.
Davies is set to undergo surgery on Wednesday and will be sidelined for a minimum of six months. Meanwhile, Upamecano is expected to miss “several weeks,” according to the club’s official statement.
This leaves both players unavailable for the upcoming Champions League fixture against Inter Milan.
“Sadly, during international breaks, there’s always the possibility that players return with injuries – this time it has hit us particularly hard,” commented Bayern’s sporting director Max Eberl.
“The loss of Alphonso Davies and Dayot Upamecano is a significant setback for Bayern. Phonzy will receive all the support he needs during his recovery, and we will monitor Upa closely in the upcoming weeks, believing he will return soon. Our squad is robust and will adapt to these absences,” Eberl added.
Canadian forced to exit early
Davies left the pitch prematurely during the third-place match in the CONCACAF Nations League against the USA, clutching his right knee. He was substituted in the 12th minute and returned to the sidelines after receiving brief treatment and applying an ice pack to his knee.
Munich CEO Jan-Christian Dreesen had initially provided reassurance after receiving positive news from Canada. Upon returning to Munich, Davies underwent a thorough examination, which confirmed the diagnosis.
Upamecano was last seen playing for France, where he scored the winning penalty in the Nations League quarter-final against Croatia last Sunday, clinching a victory of 5-4.
