Bayern Munich’s forward Harry Kane received accolades from coach Vincent Kompany on Tuesday after contributing one goal and an assist in a 2-0 triumph over Bayer Leverkusen, which secured their place in the Champions League quarter-finals.
Kane, who tops the Bundesliga scoring charts with 21 goals, struck his 10th goal in the Champions League this season in the 52nd minute, giving Bayern the lead, before providing an assist for Alphonso Davies’ goal in the 71st minute.
The 31-year-old England international has become the first English player to score 10 goals in a single European Cup season.
“It’s invaluable to have a world-class player who’s willing to run and fight for the team like a young player would,” Kompany remarked about Kane during the post-match press conference.
“I’ve faced him as an opponent, and he has only improved with time. He has a distinct way of enhancing his performances.
“I have confidence in his consistency and his approach to the game, and with that level of quality, you’re bound to create opportunities.”
Kane, who netted twice in the first leg against Leverkusen, was instrumental in Bayern’s aggregate 5-0 victory and their upcoming quarter-final clash against Serie A leaders Inter Milan.
“A huge compliment goes to the lads for their performance,” Kompany stated. “These two victories over Leverkusen are significant milestones for us.”
Before last week’s win in the first leg, Bayern had not managed to defeat the reigning Bundesliga champions Leverkusen in their last six encounters across all competitions.
Leverkusen had also knocked Bayern out of the German Cup this season.
“While these two results don’t determine our season, we hold Leverkusen in high regard. We performed our duties,” Kompany added.
“We started strong in the first 20 minutes and created the better chances. Our target was to win the first half as well as the second, and we accomplished that.“
