Bayern Munich enjoyed a comfortable 10-0 victory over Auckland City in their opening match of the Club World Cup. However, head coach Vincent Kompany stressed the need for focus when they meet Argentina’s Boca Juniors in their second Group C encounter.
Boca Juniors nearly claimed victory in their first match against Benfica, having to settle for a 2-2 draw after relinquishing a two-goal advantage. Kompany highlighted the potential danger Boca poses, particularly during transitions.
“We are well aware of the calibre of this tournament… every participating team is a champion in their own right,” Kompany remarked during a press conference ahead of Friday’s match, with Bayern aiming for their third Club World Cup title.
“Boca is a particularly hazardous opponent during transitional play. They capitalise on their opportunities. Their team spirit is commendable, and we respect Boca. However, our focus is on ourselves and showcasing our strengths in the game.”
Kompany noted their familiarity with the Argentine approach to football, as many players from the nation compete in European leagues.
“We know a substantial number of Argentine players in the European leagues. It’s a style of play we’re quite accustomed to,” he added. “It might feel slightly like an away game, but we aim to embody Bayern Munich and demonstrate the right emotions.”
Kompany expressed his satisfaction in welcoming back attacking midfielder Jamal Musiala and centre-back Dayot Upamecano, both of whom had been sidelined for over two months due to injuries.
Musiala, who contributed 12 goals in securing Bayern’s 34th German top-flight title, came off the bench to net a hat-trick against Auckland on Sunday.
“Jamal Musiala and Dayot Upamecano have been absent for quite some time, so we’re delighted to have them fit again. Integrating them back into the team is critical, but aside from them, everyone else is fully fit,” Kompany commented.
