AZ have reportedly deterred Ajax with their steep price tag for the highly-rated Kees Smit.
ESPN has revealed that following Ajax’s inquiry regarding the 19-year-old midfielder, AZ put forward an asking price of “at least €15 million”, believing Smit to be a key player for the upcoming season. Ajax, who expressed a “serious interest” in securing Smit and indicated they would invest “millions” to make him theirs, have seemingly backed off due to AZ’s lofty demands.
On Monday, while representing the Netherlands at the Under-19 European Championships, Smit was asked about Ajax’s interest and responded succinctly: “My future lies with AZ.”
Kees Smit made his debut for AZ last season during a UEFA Europa League group stage game against the Turkish powerhouse Fenerbahce, where he made an immediate impact by scoring a goal and providing an assist in AZ’s 3-1 victory. The emerging talent has also shone at the Under-19 European Championships in Romania, netting three goals in as many matches for an impressive Netherlands team.
