Boca Juniors defender Ayrton Costa will be absent from the Club World Cup after his visa application to enter the United States was rejected due to a criminal allegation against him in Argentina, the club announced on Thursday.
In 2023, Costa accepted a probationary term to sidestep a trial linked to an aggravated robbery incident from 2018, which US authorities ruled means he is still under that sentence.

Criminal convictions can result in being deemed inadmissible to the United States. This decision is part of a wider initiative by the Trump administration to tighten visa regulations for certain visitors and students.
“We can confirm that Ayrton Costa will miss the Club World Cup with Boca,” a club representative told Reuters.
“The defender was scheduled to travel on Wednesday night … but was unable to secure the visa.”
The US Embassy in Buenos Aires was not readily available for comment outside of standard business hours, as indicated by an automatic reply.
Boca’s first match is against Portuguese team Benfica in Miami on Monday.
