Australian media outlets have heavily criticised Tottenham’s decision to part ways with local hero Ange Postecoglou, describing it as a “significant blunder”, emphasising that he had consistently proven himself to be a victor.
Postecoglou, one of Australia’s most prominent managerial exports, guided Spurs to their first European trophy in 41 years and secured a spot in the upcoming Champions League.
However, he also managed the team’s poorest domestic season since their relegation from the top tier in 1976-77, which ultimately led to his dismissal.
The Sydney Morning Herald condemned chairman Daniel Levy’s choice as “cold-hearted” and one that the club “will undoubtedly regret, no matter the success of his successor“.
“There will forever linger an unanswered ‘what if’ regarding the potential of a third season for Postecoglou at Spurs,” the paper remarked.
“It seems unlikely that whoever takes the reins next will receive what is necessary to appease Levy, who appears more focused on achieving higher positions in the Premier League rather than the pursuit of actual trophies.“
In a column for The Australian, former Socceroo and West Ham great Robbie Slater decried Postecoglou’s sacking as “a major error“.
“Levy is now in a precarious position. He’s already unpopular with the Spurs supporters, and this is a significant risk,” he expressed.
“Ange had insisted that ‘season three often surpasses season two’. Best of luck with that, Spurs.“
Postecoglou, who previously managed Australia and Celtic, became the fifth manager to be dismissed by Levy in a span of just six years.
The Australian Broadcasting Corporation took a more tempered approach, stating that “when viewed objectively, Postecoglou was always going to struggle to retain his position“.
Nonetheless, they questioned why the club would dismiss a manager who fulfilled his promises by clinching a trophy in his second season.
“He has proven himself a winner across every league where he has had a significant tenure, whether in Scotland, Australia, Japan, or now England,” it remarked.
“Sacking Postecoglou aligns with Tottenham’s recent tendency to squander promising opportunities, making life challenging – even agonising – for its supporters.“
