A remarkable turn of events unfolded for Australian golfing icon Adam Scott, who suffered a staggering nine-shot setback during the final round, effectively extinguishing his hopes of clinching a second major title.
In a stunning late surge, the unseeded JJ Spaun captured the US Open on Monday morning as Scott and fellow competitor Sam Burns plummeted down the leaderboard.
Scott’s sole major victory came at the 2013 Masters.
Throughout their round, which faced an interruption lasting around an hour due to heavy rain, Scott and Burns frequently found themselves tied at the summit of the leaderboard.
Starting the day at 3-under, Scott struggled against the punishing conditions at Oakmont, ultimately finishing at 6-over for the tournament—seven shots behind Spaun, who sealed his first victory with a long birdie putt on the 18th hole.
Burns recorded an 8-over par for the day, concluding the tournament at 4-over and securing a share of seventh place.
