Many dismissed owner Bill Foley’s assertion that Auckland FC would secure their first piece of silverware within three years of entering the A-League.
However, on Sunday, the atmosphere at Mt Smart Stadium was electric as 24,000 supporters celebrated Auckland FC lifting the Premiers Plate for finishing atop the ladder at the conclusion of their inaugural regular season.
Steve Corica’s squad has made history as the first New Zealand club to win the A-League’s second-tier trophy and now aims to follow it up by clinching the ultimate prize in the upcoming Grand Final in a month’s time.
“It’s been an incredible journey so far,” remarked Corica.
“We’re not finished yet … (Western Sydney) Wanderers managed to win the Premiership during their first season, so we’re keen to see if we can surpass them.
“Achieving a double would be something truly special.“
The Black Knights’ remarkable debut season has unfolded as a quintessential New Zealand tale, showcasing a talented core of local players who have gelled brilliantly.
Initially, there were doubts regarding New Zealand’s enthusiasm for a second A-League team alongside the already established Wellington Phoenix.
Yet, those uncertainties evaporated as fans flocked to home matches, particularly when Auckland won their first six games—an unprecedented start for a first-year team.
Their derby clashes with Phoenix have drawn record attendances for regular-season football in New Zealand.
A staggering 27,000 fans were present to witness them demolish Phoenix 6-1 in February at their home ground in northern Auckland.
With an eight-point lead over second-placed Melbourne City, Auckland FC is eager to build further momentum for the playoffs as they face third-placed Western United in their final regular-season match this Saturday.
Following that, the Black Knights will enjoy a week’s break while awaiting their semifinal opponent.
Corica confirmed he wouldn’t rest any players for the match against Western United.
“Maintaining our momentum is crucial. We’ll stick to our game plan, and our goal is to secure a win against Western next week.“
