Atletico Madrid striker Angel Correa has been handed a five-match suspension following his verbal abuse directed towards a referee during last weekend’s match, the Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) announced on Wednesday.
The Argentine international was given a straight red card in the 88th minute of their 2-1 defeat against Getafe in LaLiga on Sunday for a reckless, studs-up tackle on defender Djene, a decision made after a VAR review.
Following the incident, Correa launched a stream of insults at referee Cuadra Fernandez, who duly noted the player’s comments in the match report.
The punishment consists of a one-match ban for the red card, along with an additional four matches for the disrespectful remarks, as stated by the RFEF.
The 30-year-old will be sidelined for Atletico’s upcoming five domestic fixtures, which include LaLiga clashes against Barcelona, Espanyol, Sevilla, and Valladolid, along with the second leg of their Copa del Rey semi-final against Barca.
So far this season, Correa has netted seven goals in 38 matches across all competitions.
