Aston Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has stirred the pot with Paris Saint-Germain fans by donning a cheeky baseball cap ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League quarter-final. The cap featured a French cockerel paired with the Argentina badge, along with symbols of the four trophies the Argentine has proudly secured with his national team.
Martinez previously riled French supporters with his antics during the penalty shootout that secured Argentina’s victory in the 2022 World Cup final in Qatar. His crucial save from Kingsley Coman, following a heated exchange with the referee, played a key role in guiding Lionel Messi’s side to glory.
His actions further ignited outrage in France when he waved a doll resembling Kylian Mbappe during Argentina’s jubilant celebrations in Buenos Aires.
Aston Villa’s manager, Unai Emery, however, believes the 32-year-old Martinez has developed significantly over the past few seasons.
“He has become more mature and responsible. He’s improving at managing his emotions. I worked with him at Arsenal before joining Aston Villa,” Emery stated during his pre-match press conference on Tuesday.
“When I compare the Emiliano who arrived at Aston Villa five years ago to the one we see now, it’s evident he’s transformed.
“He’s not only more mature but also a better player and goalkeeper. My discussions with him have evolved; he’s now recognised as one of the best goalkeepers in the world—he earned that accolade here in Paris.”
He further advised: “Focus on the game, concentrate on your personal challenges, and learn to manage the emotions that come with your achievements and record-breaking performances.”
Aston Villa aims to reach the Champions League semi-finals for the first time since 1983, facing a formidable PSG side that recently eliminated Liverpool and clinched the Ligue 1 title over the weekend.
