Aston Villa is set to lodge a complaint with the Premier League following a contentious 2-0 loss to Manchester United on Sunday, a result that has deprived them of Champions League qualification for next season.
The Villans fell short of a top-five finish due to goal difference, finishing behind Newcastle and now face competing in the less lucrative Europa League.
In a challenging first half, Villa’s goalkeeper, Emi Martinez, received a red card, and the team was left fuming after Morgan Rogers had a goal disallowed when the match was still locked at 0-0.
Referee Thomas Bramall called a foul on United’s goalkeeper Altay Bayindir right before Rogers found the net, which rendered a VAR review impossible.
To make matters worse, United capitalised on the situation with goals from Amad Diallo and a penalty by Christian Eriksen, leaving Villa empty-handed when they only required a draw.
“The decision is unbelievable,” exclaimed Villa captain John McGinn.
“To blow the whistle at that moment is difficult to accept. We needed just a point to secure Champions League football.”
Villa’s director of football operations, Damian Vidagany, informed reporters that the club would be raising concerns with the Premier League regarding the choice of Bramall as referee instead of a more seasoned official.
