Ollie Watkins and Donyell Malen made an impact off the bench, driving Aston Villa to a vital 3-0 triumph against Southampton. This victory marked the Villans’ fourth consecutive win in the Premier League (PL), propelling them to fifth place in the standings.
Even with the looming excitement of a UEFA Champions League quarter-final clash against PSG midweek, Villa manager Unai Emery opted for a formidable lineup against Southampton, who are seemingly headed for the Championship.
As expected, the visitors looking to secure a top-six finish quickly took control, with Marcus Rashford’s early shot blocked by Jan Bednarek and Aaron Ramsdale sprinting off his line to thwart Youri Tielemans’ strike.
The flow of the match was heavily in favour of the visitors as the first half wore on. However, Villa struggled to convert their possession into clear opportunities, with Matty Cash and Tielemans both failing to capitalise on speculative chances from distance.

Despite Villa’s dominance in possession, Southampton, who are currently without a manager, did manage to pose some danger, with Paul Onuachu narrowly missing the target with a header as the first half ended goalless.
Knowing they had only secured two wins from nine PL games after a Champions League match this season, Villa understood the importance of a strong start to the second half.
Amadou Onana’s strike was expertly saved by Ramsdale, while Bednarek headed just over his own bar amid sustained pressure from Emery’s side.
A golden opportunity arrived for Villa to break the deadlock in the 69th minute when Bednarek fouled substitute Watkins in the area. However, Ramsdale thwarted Marco Asensio’s penalty attempt.

However, the miss did not dampen Villa’s spirits, as they broke the deadlock just four minutes later. Watkins latched onto Tielemans’ precise pass and expertly guided the ball over Ramsdale, scoring his 14th PL goal of the season.
With their confidence soaring, Villa extended their lead with eleven minutes left when Malen received a slick pass from Morgan Rogers and struck a powerful effort into the bottom corner.

This goal effectively secured the points for Villa, who further embellished the scoreline during stoppage time when John McGinn scored from a rebound off another saved Asensio penalty.
As a result, Villa now sit in the Champions League qualification places, having amassed nine victories in their last ten matches across all competitions.
Conversely, Southampton finds themselves just one point away from equalling the lowest-ever Premier League points total.
