Thiago Scuro, the sporting director of AS Monaco, has expressed that waiting until summer to secure the signing of Danish international striker Mika Biereth from Sturm Graz would have been far too late.
“We were aware that if we didn’t make our move this winter, it would likely be too late by summer. Sturm Graz still had two Champions League fixtures remaining, and Mika was instrumental in their performance on the pitch,” Scuro stated in an interview with Get French Football News.
The sporting director noted that AS Monaco had been monitoring Biereth’s progress for an extended period before deciding to submit an offer.
“Our interest in him dates back to before his transfer to Sturm Graz, but we truly began to keep a close watch on him once he moved there on loan.”
“Mika established himself as a proven goalscorer, particularly after we played a friendly match against them last summer, which prompted both myself and Adi (Hütter, Monaco’s Austrian manager) to follow his progress closely for the remainder of the season,” Scuro revealed.
Scuro expressed confidence that Biereth would be a valuable addition to the team, although they didn’t foresee the exceptional start he would make in the Principality.
“He has certainly surpassed all expectations. I don’t think anyone could have predicted that such a young player would arrive and score as prolifically as he has. This success is entirely his own doing,” Scuro remarked.
So far, Biereth has netted 11 goals in just nine matches, and the sharp-shooting Danish striker will have another opportunity to increase his goal tally when Monaco hosts Nice on Saturday night.
