Arsenal’s head coach, Mikel Arteta, has urged his squad to demonstrate bravery and self-belief as they prepare for the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid on Wednesday, aiming to thwart the Spanish powerhouse’s aspirations of a comeback.
Holding a 3-0 advantage from the first fixture in London, courtesy of two magnificent goals from Declan Rice and another from Mikel Merino, Arteta acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by the reigning champions and 15-time European titleholders, who are fully capable of turning the tie around on home soil.
“Our aim is to secure a victory, just as we did in London,” Arteta stated during a press conference on Tuesday.
“Real Madrid will look to push us into areas we’d prefer to avoid. I understand this fully, as it’s part of their legacy and they have every right to contemplate these types of (comeback) scenarios.”
“We must display the mindset to win. We need to be brave, assertive, and resolute. It’s crucial that we possess the confidence to outperform them and clinch the match.”
Arteta emphasised the necessity for his players to not only trust in their skills but also to relish the thrill of the occasion, as the North London club endeavours to reach only their third Champions League semi-final.
“When you’re tasked with creating a narrative, the first step is to feel excited about it,” the Spanish manager noted. “The players need to be well-prepared and utterly convinced of their objectives.”
“The emotional factor is vital, and I take great reassurance from the team’s performance throughout the season, both in positive circumstances and under pressure.”
“Progressing to the semi-finals in this manner, coupled with our belief that we can navigate any situation, will allow us to enjoy the experience.”
Arteta confirmed that both Ben White and Thomas Partey would be fit for the match following injuries, while Jorginho has remained in London due to a rib injury sustained during the Premier League draw with Brentford on Saturday.
