Arsenal have officially announced the acquisition of Spanish midfielder Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, with reports suggesting a transfer fee of £55 million.
Following months of anticipation, the Gunners have apparently agreed to exceed the player’s release clause to facilitate the transaction in instalments rather than a single payment.
With the departures of Thomas Partey and Jorginho after their contracts expired, Zubimendi’s arrival undoubtedly strengthens Mikel Arteta’s midfield as they aim to close the gap to Premier League titleholders Liverpool.
Upon joining Arsenal, Zubimendi expressed: “This marks a significant moment in my career. It’s the move I had hoped for and one that I truly desired. The moment you arrive, you understand just how monumental this club and team are.
“I was drawn to Arsenal because their style of play suits me well. They’ve showcased their potential recently, and the best is still ahead.”
The 26-year-old made 236 appearances for the Spanish team, netting 10 goals and providing nine assists. He played a crucial part in Sociedad’s Copa del Rey victory in 2020, which ended a 34-year wait for silverware.
Zubimendi was also included in the Spanish squad that secured the European Championships in 2024, along with their triumph in the Nations League in 2023.
Arsenal will kick off their pre-season on July 23rd with a match against AC Milan.
