Liverpool defender Trent Alexander-Arnold has resumed training and is set to feature in Sunday’s Premier League clash against Leicester City, following a spell on the sidelines where he missed the last four matches due to injury, according to manager Arne Slot on Friday.
Sitting comfortably with a 13-point lead at the top of the table, Liverpool could secure their 20th English title, equalling the record, this Sunday if Arsenal falters against Ipswich Town while they triumph over 19th-placed Leicester.
The 26-year-old Alexander-Arnold sustained an ankle injury when he limped off in the team’s Champions League defeat to Paris Saint-Germain last month.
“Trent trained with us yesterday, and each time he trains and plays with the squad, he demonstrates his commitment,” Slot stated to reporters, indicating that Alexander-Arnold might be included on the bench.
“He has put in tremendous effort to return, and the moment he steps onto the pitch, he showcases what a fantastic footballer he is and how crucial he is to our ambitions this season,” he added.
With recent contract extensions signed by Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah, fans are now eagerly speculating on the future of local hero Alexander-Arnold, particularly with rumours suggesting a move to Real Madrid.
“Liverpool fans, and anyone who has watched football over the past five, six, or seven years, knows he has been an exceptional full-back for this club. We’ll see what the future holds,” Slot remarked.
“Perhaps the players are unaware of what is circulating in the media, but we’ve retained two of our key players, making it a significant summer already. Let’s see what else unfolds,” he continued.
When asked if he was excited about the possibility of lifting the title on Sunday, Slot responded: “I don’t tend to look back or forward too much. While people tell you to enjoy the moment, as a manager, my focus is on the upcoming game and ensuring we secure a win there before thinking about the next one.”
