Liverpool defender Andrew Robertson has revealed he’s on the hunt for Kenny Dalglish’s appearance record for Scotland as the national team gears up to face Greece.
The Scotland captain has been playfully reminding Sir Kenny Dalglish that he is aiming to surpass his longstanding record of 102 caps for the national team this week.
Currently, Robertson has 80 caps under his belt, meaning he requires just 23 more matches to claim the record.
The Liverpool left-back is set to make his 81st appearance in the first leg of the Nations League playoff against Greece on Thursday night and spoke with the BBC about his recent conversations with Dalglish.
“I mentioned to Kenny the other week, ‘I’m coming for you’, “ Robertson told BBC Scotland, referencing the Liverpool icon. “His response was that many players have said that before, and he remains the top dog.”
“I absolutely love representing Scotland, showing up for every training camp, and I aim to accumulate as many caps as possible,” he expressed. “Wherever that leads me is where it leads me. Reaching 80 caps fills me with immense pride.”
“You just have to focus on what’s right in front of you. With so much happening, it’s unwise to look too far ahead. A bit of luck with injuries goes a long way, but I do everything in my power to ensure I’m in prime condition for both Liverpool and Scotland.”
Both John McGinn and Craig Gordon are also vying for a spot in Scotland’s top 10 in terms of appearances, so if Robertson does break the record, it may not stand for too long.
Robertson further discussed Scotland’s aspirations and how the team has rebounded after a challenging period filled with criticism regarding the national squad.
“The Nations League has been pivotal for us, and our objective was always to reach Group A,” stated Robertson. “We reaped the rewards when we put in solid performances against Portugal and Croatia.”
“There was quite a bit of negativity following the Euros, and justifiably so. We had confidence in our ability to advance from the group stage, but we didn’t play to our potential.”
“There was a lot of speculation around whether this squad had reached its conclusion, but I believe we have bounced back impressively.”
