For the first time since his transfer from Inter Milan, Manchester United goalkeeper Andre Onana will deliberately miss a Premier League match.
This decision was made by Ruben Amorim as a way to ease the pressure surrounding the 29-year-old Cameroonian international.
Onana has endured a particularly challenging week. Following a confrontation with Nemanja Matic ahead of the first leg of the Europa League quarter-final against Lyon, he played a pivotal role in the two goals scored by the French side.
Facing significant backlash, Onana will now take a step back to recuperate away from the public eye. The Athletic reported on Sunday morning that Amorim has opted not to include him in the squad for the match against Newcastle as a precautionary measure.
As a result, Altay Bayindir will make his Premier League debut, with Tom Heaton serving as the backup keeper. This will mark just the seventh match of the season for the Turkish goalkeeper, who has previously appeared in two Europa League fixtures, one FA Cup match, and three League Cup matches.
Since joining in 2023 from Inter, Onana’s journey at United has been anything but smooth. Nevertheless, he remains a frequent starter, having made 94 appearances over the past two seasons.
