Sydney finished strongly by kicking their last four goals, igniting hopes of a remarkable comeback against Essendon on Saturday. However, they ultimately fell short, succumbing to an eight-point defeat due to disappointing accuracy in front of goal.
Rather than Essendon holding off a late challenge, it was Sydney who pushed hard but couldn’t convert opportunities, allowing the Bombers to secure an 11.5 (71) to 8.15 (63) victory at Marvel Stadium.
The loss sees the Swans drop to a 3-6 record for the season, while the Bombers improve to 5-3, moving into eighth place on the ladder.
One of the most glaring misses for Sydney came when Aaron Francis squandered a prime scoring chance, with the Swans trailing by 33 points in the third quarter.
Francis did well to win the ball in a contest against Zach Reid in the left-forward pocket, shaking off the Bomber with a deft palm and finding room on the edge of the goal square.
However, he attempted a snap that veered across the goal face, resulting in just a minor score.
“That was one of the greatest misses of all time,” remarked Fox Footy commentator Anthony Hudson.
The broadcast cameras shifted to Sydney’s coaches’ box, capturing Dean Cox shaking his head in disbelief.
The Swans were their own worst enemies, making a number of remarkable misses throughout the match.
