Manchester United’s manager, Ruben Amorim, praised Bruno Fernandes as the “ideal” captain on Thursday following his remarkable hat-trick, which secured a 4-1 victory over Real Sociedad in the Europa League. However, he stressed that the midfielder should also place more trust in his teammates.
After a 1-1 draw in the initial leg in Spain, United fell behind at Old Trafford when Mikel Oyarzabal converted a penalty. Fernandes then turned the match around, scoring three goals—two from the penalty spot—to put the home side firmly in control.
Diogo Dalot, another Portuguese international, capped off the performance with a fourth goal during stoppage time, ensuring a 5-2 victory on aggregate and advancing United to the quarter-finals.
“Whenever we need him, (Fernandes) always steps up,” Amorim remarked. “He brings the ball forward, he can score, and he truly is the perfect captain for our team. We need to support him in our efforts to win titles.”
Despite his accolades, Amorim acknowledged that Fernandes occasionally disrupts United’s formation by drifting out of position in pursuit of the ball.
“We recognise that at times he feels frustrated,” Amorim noted. “He has an intense desire to win, and when things aren’t going well, he tends to alter his position and chase the ball.”
“There are moments when he must trust his teammates more.”
Next up, United will face Leicester City in the Premier League on Sunday.
