Ruben Amorim has reminded Manchester United supporters that “everything can change” in the Premier League, following their fierce rivals Liverpool drawing level with United’s record of 20 English titles.
Currently, Amorim’s team sits in 14th place after battling to a 1-1 draw against 10-man Bournemouth on Sunday, salvaged by Rasmus Hojlund’s equaliser in injury time.
United appeared to be on the brink of suffering a 16th defeat in what has been a disappointing Premier League campaign, as Cherries forward Antoine Semenyo scored the opener in the 23rd minute.
However, a controversial red card issued to Evanilson on the hour mark for a challenge on United defender Noussair Mazraoui turned the game in United’s favour, paving the way for Hojlund’s equaliser.
Amidst the drama, United fans at the Vitality Stadium sang proudly of their 20 titles, a defiant gesture in response to Liverpool’s victory, which was sealed just hours later when Arne Slot’s side thrashed Tottenham 5-1 at Anfield.
Amorim echoed the sentiments of the United faithful, asserting that his squad will eventually be in a position to add to their title count during his tenure.
“The first priority is to concentrate on ourselves rather than on the other teams,” he stated.
“Next, we must be candid. Currently, United and Liverpool are on different levels. But everything can change.
“I remember when I first started watching the Premier League, the situation was quite the reverse, so everything can change.”
With United sitting 43 points behind Liverpool, they are keen to avoid their lowest league finish since their relegation in the 1973-74 season while also aiming for a spot in the Europa League final.
This Thursday, they will face Athletic Bilbao in the first leg of the semi-finals, and Amorim intends to concentrate on that for the time being, acknowledging that catching up to Liverpool next season will be a daunting challenge.
“We need to take it step by step and not get ahead of ourselves,” he affirmed.
“Our ultimate goal is to win the Premier League. I’m not delusional; I understand that achieving that next year may not be realistic.
“We must focus on improving in the coming year. It’s crucial for the fans, and we recognise that, but we also need to be honest with them and commit to working hard each day.”
Bournemouth seemed poised to complete their first league double over United, with Semenyo capitalising on a calamitous United free-kick to score.
However, in the closing moments of the match, a low cross from Luke Shaw was turned towards goal by Manuel Ugarte, allowing Hojlund to instinctively redirect the ball past Kepa Arrizabalaga.
“The beginning of the match was tough for us; the opponent applied high pressure, and we lost possession during our build-up, which led to their goal,” he explained.
“If you examine our games, the way we concede goals is often a result of our own mistakes, making everything much harder. We managed to score, but I feel we dropped two points today.”
