Former Demons player Joel Smith, who is currently serving a ban, is optimistic about a potential return to the AFL following the completion of his drug-related suspension.
In October 2024, Smith was handed a four-year suspension after being found guilty of breaching several anti-doping regulations concerning cocaine use and trafficking.
The defender is prohibited from training with any AFL teams until November 2027 and is barred from participating in any anti-doping compliant competitions until January 9, 2028.
While Smith’s suspension restricts him from playing in any social sports teams, it has not diminished his desire to get back into the competitive arena.
“I plan to return to playing footy,” he shared during an appearance on The Watch podcast.

“If I get another opportunity, whether that’s in the AFL or playing at a local level, I will definitely return to playing footy,” he added.
Smith acknowledged that the prospects of a return to the AFL are somewhat precarious, especially as he will be nearing 31 years of age by that time.
Nonetheless, he believes he still has at least another four seasons left in him if given the opportunity.
“I haven’t really thought in depth about how to navigate my return to the AFL, nor have I discussed it with anyone yet,” Smith explained.
“I’ll begin to explore that as the time draws closer.”
“It would be fantastic to join a team that is in pursuit of a premiership, but I’ll also consider local footy as a solid option.”

Smith recalled the moment he realised his career was in jeopardy when club officials summoned him for a private meeting after a match.
“I felt a bit deflated, thinking, ‘I might be in trouble here,'” he remarked.
“When the club calls saying, ‘You have to come in, something’s come up,’ and then they handed me the game-day testing document, it was a devastating feeling.”
“The initial three months were dreadful, as I believed I would be back on the field in three months, which adds to the frustration.”
“It was tough. I considered contesting it, but unfortunately, I faced further charges.”
The former player admitted he was aware of his use of the banned substance prior to the match but clarified he did not consume it on game day.
“I did use the substance close to game time, but definitely not on the day of the game,” Smith stated.
“It’s disappointing that the situation wasn’t seen through more clearly. Had I not consumed it on game day, I would have faced a three-month suspension.”
“I had to come to terms with the whole process… it took a toll on me.”
“However, I’ve learned a lot from this experience. Yes, I made a mistake, but everyone makes mistakes, and it’s part of growth and learning.”
