Newcastle United forward Alexander Isak has opted out of the Sweden squad for two upcoming international friendlies next month due to an ongoing groin issue that he has struggled to overcome.
Isak featured in the Magpies’ 1-0 defeat to Everton on the final day of the Premier League season on Sunday, a match that ultimately secured their spot in the UEFA Champions League for the coming season thanks to results elsewhere.
Though he played the full 90 minutes, Isak’s contribution was minimal, particularly as he had missed the previous week’s match against Arsenal due to his groin injury.
This injury seems to have influenced his lacklustre performance, and sadly it means he will not be available to represent his country in June, having withdrawn from Jon Dahl Tomasson’s squad.
Sweden is set to face Hungary away on 6th June before hosting Algeria in Solna on 10th June, but Isak will not be increasing his tally of 16 goals and 52 caps.
For the second international window in succession, Tomasson must navigate without a fully fit attacking lineup, following Viktor Gyokeres’ absence for the March friendlies. These matches in June present the final opportunity for the manager to experiment ahead of the World Cup qualification campaign, which kicks off in September.
In light of Isak’s withdrawal, the Blagult have summoned Jordan Larsson from FC Copenhagen and Gustaf Nilsson from Club Brugge to bolster the squad.
