Alexa Leary has committed to giving it her all in a bid to shatter her own world record in the 100m freestyle at the upcoming para-swimming world championships, following two narrow near-misses at the Australian trials.
The 23-year-old swimmer sent a strong message to her competitors in freestyle after an impressive display in Adelaide on Thursday night.
On Tuesday evening, Leary fell just 0.01 seconds short of matching her world record in the 50m freestyle, and on Thursday she produced a blistering time of 58.97 seconds in the 100m event.
The two-time Paralympic gold medalist reached the 50m mark in a rapid 28.20 seconds, which was over a quarter of a second faster than her previous world-record split for the distance.
The last 15 metres of the race made the critical difference as Leary finished 0.08 seconds shy of her personal best.
However, the slight margin didn’t faze Leary in the slightest.
