Australia’s Alex de Minaur has been eliminated from the Miami Open after a fluctuating fourth-round match against former top-10 player Matteo Berrettini.
In a tense second set, Berrettini managed to save six set points as de Minaur failed to capitalise on his chances to push the match to a deciding third set in this Masters 1000 showdown.
Ultimately, de Minaur fell to Berrettini with a score of 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) at the Hard Rock Stadium.

Berrettini began strongly, breaking de Minaur’s serve right from the start and quickly establishing a 3-0 advantage.
Despite facing two breakpoints, Berrettini managed to maintain his serve, ultimately winning the first set 6-3.
The second set was a dramatic affair, with the 10th seed fending off four match points as he sought to level the match but ultimately lost on the fifth after a two-hour battle on the court.
At one point, de Minaur was leading 5-4 and holding a 40-love advantage, but the powerful-serving Italian responded heroically, saving all three set points.
Having previously been a finalist at Wimbledon and now returning to form after injury, Berrettini seized the momentum, winning seven consecutive points which allowed him to take the next three games.
De Minaur was then required to convert a breakpoint to extend the second set into a tiebreak.
In the tiebreak, Berrettini displayed his resilience again, coming back from a double break down at 6-3 to thwart de Minaur’s chances of achieving his best 18th win of the year.
This defeat, riddled with 27 unforced errors, marks de Minaur’s second consecutive exit in the fourth round of a Masters 1000 tournament.
De Minaur’s departure also dashed hopes for an all-Australian quarter-final, as compatriot Adam Walton was defeated in his final-16 match against American third seed Taylor Fritz with a score of 6-3, 7-5.
Ranked at world No. 30—his highest position since 2022—Berrettini is set to face Fritz in the quarter-finals.
This victory also sees Berrettini reaching the quarter-finals of a Masters 1000 event for the first time since Madrid 2021, and it marks his inaugural appearance in the last eight at Miami.
