Alejandro Garnacho has raised questions about his future with Manchester United following his exclusion from the squad by Ruben Amorim during the Red Devils’ Europa League final loss to Tottenham.
The club has experienced one of its most challenging seasons in the Premier League’s history, resulting in their absence from European competition next term after a 1-0 defeat in Bilbao on Wednesday.
As it stands, Amorim’s team is languishing at 16th place in the Premier League with just one match remaining.
Garnacho had been a starter in every knockout match leading to the Europa League final.
However, the 20-year-old was passed over in favour of Mason Mount and only made his appearance as United sought an equaliser with 19 minutes left on the clock.
“I played every round until the final, and then I was on for 20 minutes today… I’m not sure,” Garnacho remarked to reporters.
“We didn’t manage to secure any wins in the league. We’re lacking in so many areas. When you struggle to score, you always find yourself wanting more.”
Previously, Garnacho was linked with potential moves to Napoli or Chelsea during the January transfer window after being dropped from the squad by Amorim for a December match against Manchester City.
“The outcome of the final will certainly have an influence (on my decision), but the overall season and the club’s situation will play a role as well,” Garnacho further commented.
“I’ll be looking to make the most of my summer and see what unfolds afterwards.”
Garnacho’s brother, Roberto, took to social media to express his feelings, stating that he felt he had been “thrown under the bus”.
In defence of his selection choices, Amorim highlighted that Mount had a significant impact off the bench, scoring twice in the semi-final’s second leg against Athletic Bilbao.
“How often have we discussed this with the roles reversed? There are players, such as Mason Mount, who can come on and change the game, like he did against Bilbao,” Amorim said.
“Who squandered a critical chance in the first half against Bilbao? Yes, it was Garnacho. Of course, it’s easy to have hindsight in these discussions.”
