Ajax’s goalkeeper Matheus Magalhães has candidly discussed a challenging chapter in his personal life during an interview with De Telegraaf.
The 33-year-old made the move to Amsterdam on loan from Braga in January. Since then, the Brazilian goalkeeper has taken on more responsibility than anticipated, as first-choice keeper Remko Pasveer has been battling ongoing injury issues.
In his interview with De Telegraaf, Matheus opened up about a deep personal struggle as he navigates a tough period behind the scenes.
“I’m facing a tough time because my father has been diagnosed with cancer, and it’s a lot to cope with. People often see me smiling, but they aren’t aware of what I’m dealing with privately. I think it’s important to share this now,” Matheus revealed.

“Aside from my father’s situation, my family and I are really enjoying our time in Amsterdam. Ajax is a fantastic club that allows me to pursue my ambitions,” the Brazilian goalkeeper continued, expressing satisfaction with his move, despite Braga’s desire to retain him.
“Braga wanted to hold on to me, but I see this as a step forward, a great adventure.”
While he is looking forward to the challenge in the Netherlands, Matheus admits that adapting has been tough, particularly due to the weather.
“We arrived at the start of February when it was minus four degrees. It definitely puts a Brazilian out of their comfort zone,” he remarked.
