Eredivisie leaders Ajax are set to clash with former finalists Eintracht Frankfurt in the UEFA Europa League round of 16—an encounter they have yet to experience.
The Amsterdam club secured a 2-0 victory against Royale USG in Brussels, overcoming challenging conditions on a muddy pitch that had been previously deemed unsuitable. Christian Rasmussen and Jorthy Mokio netted crucial goals in the second half, ensuring Ajax progressed despite a hard-fought 2-1 defeat back in Amsterdam, which ultimately saw them win the tie 3-2 on aggregate thanks to an extra-time goal.
Ajax last advanced to the Europa League round of 16 in the 2020/21 season, triumphing over the Swiss team Young Boys with an emphatic 5-0 aggregate scoreline. This season, the famed Dutch side will take on Bundesliga team Eintracht Frankfurt as they move forward in European competition.
There is little history between Ajax and Eintracht Frankfurt, with their only previous encounter occurring during a friendly in August 2020. In that match, West Ham star Mohamed Kudus and the now-convicted Quincy Promes both scored, leading Ajax to a 2-1 victory.
In drawing Eintracht Frankfurt, Ajax has sidestepped a potential reunion with Olympique Lyon, a team they previously faced in the semi-finals of the 2016/17 UEFA Europa League, a tournament which saw Ajax reach their first European final since 1996.
The fixtures are set for March 6th and 13th, beginning with the first leg in Amsterdam before the teams head to Frankfurt for the return match.
