Ajax’s head coach Francesco Farioli found himself at odds with a journalist from the Netherlands following the team’s 4-1 defeat in the away leg against Eintracht Frankfurt.
In a surprising move, Farioli made ten alterations to the lineup compared to the team that faced Eintracht Frankfurt last week. Striker Brian Brobbey, defender Youri Baas, and goalkeeper Remko Pasveer were unavailable due to injuries, while captain Jordan Henderson was sidelined due to a suspension.
This significant reshuffling drew criticism from both fans and the media, who accused Farioli of conceding the Europa League after a 2-1 loss in the previous leg.
When journalist Mike Verweij from De Telegraaf suggested that Farioli should have sent assistant manager Dave Vos to the press conference instead, labelling it a “B-team night,” the Italian manager responded sharply.
“I find your comments quite disrespectful towards these players,” Farioli retorted.
“I’m well aware of all your articles,” he continued, cutting off Verweij as he attempted to interject. “No, no, no, let me finish.”
“When I made changes against NAC Breda after playing Panathinaikos, you implied it was because I was prioritising one match over another, but that isn’t the case.”
“My aim is to prioritise the next fixture and show respect to this team, which has faced numerous challenges across Europe. They’ve consistently done so with pride, bringing joy to our supporters.”
Ajax’s heavy 4-1 defeat in Frankfurt marked a bitter end to their extensive European journey, which had begun in July 2024 during the second round of the UEFA Europa League qualifiers.
“We may have lost 4-1 tonight, yet the fans showed their appreciation for the players because this group has achieved remarkable things. Therefore, I ask for a bit more respect.”
“Thank you, next.”
When Verweij pressed Farioli on whether he respects the fans and could clarify his decision to field a predominantly reserve squad, the coach’s irritation was apparent.
“(I respect them) immensely. I’ve made similar changes in several other matches.” This season, Ajax has only experienced one loss following a European game, which occurred against NAC Breda in August 2024. “Losses are part of football,” Farioli added.
“So do you really think we threw in the towel today? Do you believe we came here waving a white flag? We played until the final whistle, we fought hard, and we tried to score.”

“Please, Mike. We’ve been having this conversation for nine months. I consistently show respect, so again, feel free to critique me, say what you like. But don’t imply that I lack respect or refer to a ‘B-team’.
“Our position in the league, having played 18 matches in Europe, is due to all these players, from the superstars to the young talent. They are a fantastic group, dedicating themselves to Ajax, and they are making the club, the players, and the supporters incredibly proud.”
Farioli firmly dismissed Verweij’s attempts to ask further questions, stating: “Thank you very much. Next please.”
Earlier this season, Verweij stirred controversy when he sparked a confrontation between Henderson and himself regarding the midfielder’s transfer saga, with Henderson accusing the journalist of fabricating stories during a press conference.
