Barcelona’s Aitana Bonmati was honoured as the Women’s Champions League player of the season on Sunday, following the Spanish champions’ impressive achievement of reaching their fifth consecutive final in the competition.
This marks the third successive year that Bonmati has received this recognition; throughout the European campaign, she made significant contributions with five assists and four goals. However, despite these efforts, Barcelona fell short of securing the trophy for a third year in a row, succumbing to a narrow 1-0 defeat against Arsenal in the final on Saturday.
The 27-year-old Spanish international not only shone in assists and goals but also scored the season’s standout goal with a spectacular solo effort during the second leg of the semi-final against Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.
In that match, Bonmati skillfully dodged a challenge from Niamh Charles, surged through the Chelsea midfield, and unleashed a powerful strike into the top corner, giving Barcelona an early advantage that ultimately led to a 4-1 victory and a place in the final.
In addition to Bonmati, five Arsenal players were selected for the competition’s team of the season: goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar, defenders Emily Fox and Leah Williamson, along with forwards Mariona Caldentey and Alessia Russo.
Alongside Barca’s Bonmati, Maria Leon, Patricia Guijarro, and Claudia Pina also featured in the prestigious list. They were joined by Chelsea’s Sandy Baltimore and Olympique Lyonnais midfielder Melchie Dumornay, 21, who was celebrated as the best young player of the season.
