AC Milan still have the chance to salvage what has been a disappointing season by achieving success in the Coppa Italia. Manager Sergio Conceicao stated on Tuesday that they don’t need the added motivation of blocking local rivals Inter Milan from securing a treble.
Currently sitting ninth in the Serie A standings, Milan are out of the Champions League and far behind in the race to qualify for next season’s tournament. In contrast, Inter are leading the domestic league and have reached the semi-finals of Europe’s premier club competition.
Last season, Milan were on the receiving end of defeat against Inter, who clinched the Scudetto with that victory. However, Conceicao has his own reasons for wanting to triumph over their city rivals in Wednesday’s Cup semi-final return leg, which is locked at 1-1 following the first match at San Siro.
“Motivation doesn’t stem from our opponents, but from our daily efforts,” Conceicao conveyed to reporters. “Regrettably, there are no more opportunities in the league, including for Champions League qualification, so we are solely focused on tomorrow.”
That said, Conceicao acknowledges the significance of this match for a prestigious club like Milan, who cannot be satisfied with a solitary victory in the Italian Super Cup this season.
“This is a crucial match for everyone involved—players, the club, and the supporters, and we recognise that,” he remarked.
“Milan should be contesting for the Scudetto and the Champions League; it’s expected of them, despite the recent years. For a club of Milan’s stature, reaching the Coppa Italia final should be the norm.”
“I would like to extend my congratulations to Inter for their Champions League and league triumphs, which exemplify their strength. However, this match is critical for us as we aspire to win and reach the final to present a trophy to our fans.”
Bologna currently hold a 3-0 lead over Empoli in the other semi-final, with the return leg set to take place on Thursday.
Milan defender Kyle Walker, on loan from Manchester City, sustained a fractured elbow two weeks ago, while midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been recovering from appendicitis. Nevertheless, Conceicao confirmed both players will be available for the encounter against Inter.
“Walker has been training with the squad, although he’s not at his peak,” the manager mentioned. “However, both he and Loftus-Cheek will be in attendance. It’s positive news for us.”
Conceicao commenced his press conference by paying tribute to Pope Francis, who passed away on Monday.
“He was a significant figure in the Catholic Church. I attend Mass every day at 6:30 PM in central Milan,” said the manager.
“He was an extraordinary individual. His words and his presence will be greatly missed.”
