Jacqueline Devereaux was a university student when she stumbled upon a newspaper ad seeking motorsport officials. That moment proved to be a turning point, laying the foundation for a life devoted to officiating at motorsport events.
Although motorsport had always been a passion for Devereaux, her first experience as a volunteer in Canberra marked her official introduction to the realm of officiating.
It didn’t take long for her to recognise the vast opportunities within the motorsport industry. She eagerly seized every chance to participate in numerous events, reflecting a familiar narrative shared by many in Motorsport Australia’s volunteer community.
“We are all here officiating because of our love for the sport,” Devereaux remarked.
“It’s a fantastic way to engage with and contribute to motorsport, and you often see the same officials at different events, creating a sense of family away from home.
“That camaraderie is what keeps most of us returning, although at our core, we’re all passionate fans of racing.”
Like countless others among the 11,000 Motorsport Australia Officials, Devereaux was one of nearly 1,000 volunteers who lent their expertise at the 2025 Formula 1 Louis Vuitton Australian Grand Prix, where she served as Deputy Chief Marshal.
“We were responsible for overseeing all the trackside marshals, including flag marshals, sector marshals, radio communications, observers, and track marshals,” Devereaux explained.
“Our duties involved deploying them, deciding their positions, and ensuring their safety and wellbeing while on the track.”
Within her local circuit, Devereaux has taken on various roles—Chief Marshal, Sector Marshal, Assistant Secretary, Recovery, and a member of the Safety Car Community. Her diverse experiences have also led her to prestigious events such as the Bathurst 1000, various endurance races at Mount Panorama, the Adelaide 500, the Gold Coast 500, and the NSW State Motor Race Championship.
Devereaux’s journey has also seen her volunteering internationally at events like the Singapore, United States, and Azerbaijan Grands Prix, Petit Le Mans, 24 Hours of Spa, and the Goodwood Festival of Speed.
The best way to embark on a journey as an official is to fully commit yourself and take every opportunity as it comes.
“Just come and give it a shot,” Devereaux encouraged.
“There’s a role for everyone, and you never know where it might take you, so if you have an interest in motorsport, give it a go.
“Try out different roles until you find the perfect fit for you. Even if it’s not what you initially set out to do, give it a chance; you might just uncover your dream role.
“The connections you make and the skills you acquire will pave the way to where you aspire to be.”
