Former Harambee Stars forward Boniface Ambani has been appointed as the new chairman of AFC Leopards, a prominent club in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League. His election took place on Sunday at a hotel in Nairobi.
Overseeing the voting process was the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), where Ambani received 1,101 votes, surpassing his opponent Enos Mutoka who garnered 682 votes. He will succeed Dan Shikanda, who has held the position for two terms.
Ambani’s election was part of a new administration that includes Isaac Mulindi as Secretary General, who won with 656 votes, defeating Robert Situma (534) and Irene Sitawa (429). Additionally, Newton Lime is the new treasurer with 676 votes, defeating Edward Buhasho (599) and Patrick Kanyangi (445).
He steps into this role at a time when the club has not won a trophy in 27 years, despite being the third most successful team in Kenya’s footballing history.
The last time AFC Leopards clinched the Premier League was in 1998, a season in which Ambani was part of the squad. Their most recent trophy was the domestic cup, achieved in 2017.
“My leadership will prioritise openness; I want to restore the joy to AFC Leopards fans who have been without it for far too long. We must transform our management style to reach our goals. It marks a new beginning for the club. We are AFC Leopards, and we deserve to compete for trophies. I am determined to ensure we challenge for silverware across all competitions,” he stated.
“It is time for AFC Leopards to reclaim its place as champions. I assure our fans that the trophy drought will end under my leadership; it’s only a matter of time. We must revitalise our brand and ensure the team returns to its rightful position.”
During the 1998 season, Ingwe topped the league, finishing three points ahead of second-placed Mumias Sugar, thus securing their 12th league title. However, they failed to defend their title in the subsequent season, finishing as runners-up and have been seeking another championship since then.

Ingwe’s last title was the FKF Cup, also known as the GOtv Shield, which they won on October 20, 2017, by defeating Sharks 2-0. The goals were netted by defender Abdalla Salim and forward Vincent Oburu under coach Robert Matano.
Reviving the Legacy of the AFC Leopards
Following Ambani’s election, the loyal supporters of AFC Leopards took to social media, urging him to swiftly rejuvenate the club’s fortunes.
Khalayi Wekulo Joe expressed, “Please restore the pride of our badge and make it shine again. Make Ingwe great once more – it is in your DNA. You belong to our glorious past.”
“The year I started supporting Ingwe was a season you were our striker. Ambani, do not let us down; you can achieve this, we believe in your capabilities,” another fan, Bantu Freeman Omwami, suggested.
Bantu further advised, “Dear Boniface, congratulations! I humbly urge you to establish a business development and fundraising portfolio for AFC Leopards. There are many opportunities for making money outside of ticket sales, merchandise, and sponsorship.
“Consider alternative revenue streams such as data monetisation, private partnerships, and events. Creating sustainable revenue will require implementing good governance to ensure accountability. There have been numerous proposals that the outgoing office disregarded due to a lack of funds to bribe them for implementation. Best of luck.”

“It’s time to get things moving, brother. We have waited long enough,” remarked Robert Ouko Obusebwa. Meanwhile, Kriss Daggy said, “The power is now in your hands. Do not let us down; we wish you success.”
Sim Simmer Evayo added, “In my entire life, I have never seen, nor heard about AFC Leopards winning the league. I hope to witness that under your presidency. Congratulations, and good luck.”
Simon Ochandah wrote, “Congratulations, brother. It’s time to roll up your sleeves and revive the lost glory at the Den. This challenging work lies squarely on your shoulders, as the chairman. Wishing you all the very best as you lead Ingwe into a new era.”
AFC Leopards hold a total of 12 top-flight league titles, making them the third most successful club in Kenya, trailing Tusker (13 titles) and Gor Mahia (21 titles). In addition to their league successes, they have also won the Kenya Cup 10 times and the CECAFA Club Championship five times.
