Former Harambee Stars forward Boniface Ambani has been appointed as the new chairman of AFC Leopards, one of the top clubs in the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Premier League. His election took place on Sunday at a hotel in Nairobi.
Overseen by the Independent Elections and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), Ambani polled 1,101 votes, defeating his only rival, Enos Mutoka, who received 682 votes. Ambani takes over from Dan Shikanda, who served two consecutive terms.
Additionally, Isaac Mulindi has been elected as the new Secretary General, receiving 656 votes to surpass Robert Situma (534) and Irene Sitawa (429). Newton Lime will serve as the treasurer after securing 676 votes, defeating Edward Buhasho (599) and Patrick Kanyangi (445).
Ambani steps into a role at a club that has endured a prolonged 27-year trophy drought, despite being Kenya’s third most successful club historically.
The last time Ingwe clinched the Premier League title was in 1998, with Ambani as part of that victorious squad, while their most recent trophy came in the form of the domestic cup in 2017.
“I aim to lead with transparency and inclusiveness. It’s crucial for AFC Leopards fans to rediscover the joy they’ve been missing for years. We need to transform our management approach to meet our goals. This marks a new era for the club, where we, as AFC Leopards, rightfully belong in the trophy race, and I am committed to ensuring we compete for silverware across all competitions,” he stated.
“It’s time for AFC Leopards to reclaim its status as champions. Soon, the supporters will see the rewards of my leadership. I assure them, the trophy drought will come to an end under my guidance.”
“AFC Leopards is not just a club; it’s a brand. We need to polish its image and restore the team to its rightful place.”
During that championship-winning season, Ingwe topped the table, finishing three points ahead of second-placed Mumias Sugar to secure their 12th league title. However, they failed to defend their title in the subsequent season, finishing in second place, and have since been in search of a new crown.

The last time Ingwe lifted a title was in the FKF Cup, previously known as the GOtv Shield, on October 20, 2017, following their 2-0 win over Sharks. Under the guidance of coach Robert Matano, Ingwe secured the final with goals from defender Abdalla Salim and forward Vincent Oburu.
Bringing Back the Pride of the AFC Leopards Badge
Following Ambani’s election, AFC Leopards fans took to social media to express their support and called for a swift turnaround in the club’s fortune.
Khalayi Wekulo Joe commented: “Please restore the pride of our badge and make Ingwe great again. You are part of its rich legacy, and it’s time to bring it back to its former glory.”
Another supporter, Bantu Freeman Omwami, advised, “Dear Boniface, congratulations on your appointment. Just a suggestion – consider creating a business development, fundraising, and resource mobilisation strategy for AFC Leopards. There are numerous avenues for generating income beyond ticket sales, merchandise, and sponsorship. The team can thrive by monetising data, forging private partnerships, and innovating products.”
“Sustainable revenue streams and robust governance will drive accountability. Previous proposals for innovation were unfortunately overlooked by the outgoing office due to a lack of financial incentives for implementation. Thank you, and all the best.”

“Let it rain, brother. We’ve endured enough drought,”
“Since my birth, I have never seen or even heard of AFC Leopards winning the league. I hope to witness that while you’re at the helm as club president. Congratulations and best of luck,” offered Sim Simmer Evayo.
Simon Ochandah stated: “Congratulations, mate. It’s time to get to work and restore the lost glory at the den. This important task now rests in your capable hands as chairman. Wishing you all the best in leading Ingwe.”
AFC Leopards, with 12 top-flight league titles, rank as Kenya’s third most successful club, trailing Tusker (13 titles) and Gor Mahia (21 titles). In addition to their league success, they have lifted the Kenya Cup 10 times and the CECAFA Club Championship on five occasions.
