Following their narrow 1-0 loss to their fierce Scandinavian rivals, Sweden, Denmark faces an uphill battle as they prepare to meet Germany in the Women’s Euro tonight.
If Denmark suffers a defeat against Germany while Sweden manages to avoid losing to Poland, their chances of progressing to the quarter-finals will be dashed. This presents a significant challenge for Andree Jeglertz’s team, especially considering that the Germans are one of the tournament’s favourites and previously defeated Denmark comfortably 3-0 in their last encounter during a Nations League match in December 2023.
Germany kicked off their campaign with conviction, securing a 2-0 victory over Poland in St. Gallen, with both goals coming in the second half.
Jule Brand opened the scoring in the 52nd minute with a brilliant strike from outside the area, before providing the assist for Lea Schuller to extend Germany’s lead.
The Germans have been on a remarkable winning streak, boasting six consecutive victories while accumulating an impressive total of 26 goals. In addition, Christian Wuck’s squad has maintained clean sheets in four of their last five matches.
Denmark has a history of success in recent European Championships, having reached the semi-finals in 2013 and finishing as runners-up to the Netherlands in 2017.
However, their form has faltered significantly since then, as evidenced by their early exit in 2022, where they couldn’t advance beyond the group stage.
In their opening match against Sweden, the Danes fought valiantly but were ultimately undone by Filippa Angeldal’s second-half strike, resulting in a disappointing loss.
Jeglertz’s side will be keen to regain their confidence ahead of this crucial clash, particularly as they have lost three of their last four international outings, which does not bode well for the challenging game against the reigning European champions.
Germany will be without their captain Giulia Gwinn for the remainder of the tournament following a medial cruciate ligament injury sustained in the opening match. Carlotte Wamser is expected to step in as right back against Denmark.
If Jeglertz opts to revamp his midfield, Josefine Hasbo could be brought in, especially after their midfield struggles against Sweden, while Signe Bruun might get an opportunity to make an impact in the Danish forward line against a solid German defence.
Predicted team line-ups:
Germany: Berger; Linder, Knaak, Minge, Wamser; Nüsken, Senß; Bühl, Dallmann, Brand; Schüller
Misses next match if booked: None
Denmark: Ostergaard; Veje, Ballisager, Faerge; S Holmgaard, Snerle, K Holmgaard, Thogersen; Harder, Vangsgaard, Thomsen
Misses next match if booked: Snerle
