Chelsea icon Claude Makelele has stepped in to support striker Nicolas Jackson, defending him against the increasing wave of criticism regarding his current form.
The Senegalese forward, who transferred from Villarreal to Chelsea, has now completed two seasons at Stamford Bridge, dazzling fans with a tally of 30 goals and 12 assists in 80 outings across all competitions.
A defining moment in his career arrived with a crucial goal in the UEFA Conference League final, showcasing his talent on the grandest stages. However, recent disciplinary issues—specifically two red cards in just four matches—have drawn heavy criticism.
His dismissals in matches against Newcastle United and Flamengo during the FIFA Club World Cup have raised alarm over his disciplinary record, leading supporters and analysts to question his temperament. Some are beginning to doubt whether he is a suitable long-term fit for the London club.
Nonetheless, the former French international, who faced immense pressure during his own illustrious career at Stamford Bridge, emphasises Jackson’s unselfish play.
“I know he’s a good lad, you understand. He definitely needs assistance from another striker because he can’t carry the load in every match. He has a genuine desire to play for Chelsea, and for me, he’s a talented player.”
Caicedo’s impact in midfield
Makelele, often hailed as one of the finest defensive midfielders of his era, played a pivotal role in Chelsea’s glorious period under Jose Mourinho.
Since his arrival from Real Madrid in 2003, he became the cornerstone of a side that clinched consecutive Premier League titles (2004–05, 2005–06), an FA Cup, two League Cups, and a Community Shield during his five-year tenure.
Given his storied legacy and lasting impact on the modern defensive midfielder role, Makelele was naturally asked about Moises Caicedo and his standing among the world’s elite midfielders.
Regarding the Ecuadorian, who moved to Chelsea from Brighton and Hove Albion, Makelele stated: “We’re in a different era of midfielders now, but I really admire this young player for how he handles his position.
“He’s always got a smile on his face and consistently delivers strong performances for Chelsea. If he maintains this level of commitment and receives the right guidance within the squad, I genuinely believe he can emerge as one of the best midfielders in the game.”
“As we continue to get to know him better, it’s obvious he’s one of the standout players in the team, capable of defining his role—because that’s what true midfielders do.”
Since joining Stamford Bridge, Caicedo has quickly established himself as a vital asset in the squad. Drawing inspiration from Paul Pogba and N’Golo Kante, he has embraced and enhanced the qualities of both players on the pitch.
Are Chelsea genuine title contenders?
Makelele also offered a balanced perspective on Chelsea’s prospects for this season’s Premier League title, emphasising the need for patience and concentration as the team seeks to bounce back from a challenging last campaign.
Last season, Enzo Maresca’s side faced a turbulent ride filled with inconsistency and injury setbacks that affected their overall performance.
Despite these hurdles and struggles to find a consistent rhythm, they demonstrated resilience and ultimately secured a hard-fought fourth-place finish in the Premier League.
When questioned whether their displays in the Club World Cup indicate a potential challenge to the likes of Liverpool, Manchester City, and Arsenal for the 2025-26 title, the Frenchman responded: “I think it’s still early days, you know.
“For now, I believe this team needs to focus on finishing this competition (Club World Cup) before they can fully concentrate on the Premier League.
“The Premier League is incredibly tough. It’s the most challenging competition in the world.”
Chelsea is set to face Brazilian side Fluminense in the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup on Tuesday at MetLife Stadium, with the victor moving on to meet either Paris Saint-Germain or Real Madrid in the final.
