Essendon versatile player Nik Cox has been sidelined for the rest of the season, but he has received the green light to resume his AFL career.
This update follows the 23-year-old’s appearance before the league’s concussion review panel after experiencing multiple head injuries throughout his brief career.
Cox has not played at the AFL level this season since suffering a concussion during training in December and subsequently had symptoms resurface after two appearances in the VFL.

Earlier this season, the same panel determined the career course for West Coast champion Jeremy McGovern.
The AFL has been facing increasing scrutiny over early retirements due to concussion, with notable players like Melbourne’s Angus Brayshaw, Collingwood’s Nathan Murphy, and Brisbane’s Marcus Adams also sidelined.
In a related incident, 18-year-old Western Bulldogs recruit Aiden O’Driscoll was forced to retire after sustaining a significant head injury during his initial summer with the club in 2024.
Essendon issued a statement indicating that Cox is eager to focus on revitalising his AFL career, even if it won’t be during the current season.
“Following my consultation with an independent AFL medical panel regarding my concussion history, I’m relieved to have been cleared to continue my playing journey,” Cox shared on the club’s website.
“While I’m disappointed about not being able to return this year, I intend to utilise this time away from the game to prioritise my health, recovery, and build a strong foundation ahead of pre-season.
“I’m deeply thankful for my club, teammates, medical team, and everyone who has supported me during this challenging and uncertain time. I’ve gained valuable insights into myself over the past months and am more eager than ever to return to doing what I love.
“My immediate focus is on collaborating closely with specialists and the club to ensure I’m in the best possible physical and mental condition to return to competitive footy.”

Daniel McPherson, the club’s general manager of football, commented: “Nik has been through a challenging time with ongoing concussion symptoms, and we are fully committed to assisting him in his physical and mental recovery.”
Since being picked at number eight in the 2020 AFL draft, Cox has played 53 matches for the Bombers.
In other news, Essendon players Zach Reid (hamstring) and Jye Caldwell (ankle) are set to undergo surgery, likely putting them out for the remainder of the season.
This news adds to an injury crisis at Essendon, where up to 15 players are expected to appear on their injury list ahead of the upcoming round 18 match against Richmond.
Furthermore, Essendon forward Isaac Kako has been named this week’s AFL Rising Star nominee.
