On Sunday, the United States fell short in the CONCACAF Gold Cup final, suffering a 2-1 defeat to rivals Mexico. Despite the disappointment, head coach Mauricio Pochettino believes the team will learn invaluable lessons as they prepare for next year’s World Cup.
The match, held in Houston, Texas, saw the US take an early lead with a header from Chris Richards. However, Mexico responded strongly, equalising through Raul Jimenez before Edson Alvarez secured the victory, marking their tenth Gold Cup title.
Pochettino conveyed to the media that although the night was painful for his team, the tournament served as excellent preparation for the 2026 World Cup, which the US will co-host alongside Mexico and Canada.
“It was a significant lesson for us. This tournament was fantastic in shaping our growth,” he remarked.
“I genuinely believe this experience is how we’ll improve our competitiveness and achieve the standards we aspire to reach.”
“Experiencing a trophy loss is truly painful. However, it’s crucial for us to hold our heads high because the tournament was exceptional and we’ll continue on this path towards our World Cup journey.”
Despite reaching the final, the US faced challenges due to several key absences. Christian Pulisic and Yunus Musah made the controversial decision to withdraw, while Weston McKennie, Gio Reyna, and Tim Weah were unavailable due to commitments with their clubs in the Club World Cup.
Nonetheless, Pochettino refrained from dwelling on these absences. “The squad we assembled deserved to reach this stage, and now is not the time to discuss which players should have been here,” he stated.
Looking ahead, the US will host South Korea and Japan for friendly matches in September.
