Chelsea’s manager Enzo Maresca has conveyed his deep condolences in light of the tragic demise of Liverpool’s Diogo Jota, sending his heartfelt sympathies and love to the player’s family.
The 28-year-old and his brother, Andre, sadly lost their lives on Thursday when their car departed from the motorway in Cernadilla, a locality within the Zamora province of northwestern Spain.
Jota, who made the move to Liverpool from Wolves, was instrumental in Arne Slot’s Premier League title-winning season last year, having previously celebrated victories in the FA Cup, Community Shield, and twice in the Carabao Cup during his tenure at Anfield.
Before addressing the media ahead of Friday’s Club World Cup quarter-final match against Palmeiras, the Italian coach shared a touching message directed at the family of the Portuguese player.
“This is an incredibly sad day. I am at a loss for words because it’s such a tough situation. One feels utterly powerless in moments like this,” Maresca conveyed to the press.
“All I can say is that I send my love to his family and to those affected, as this is an immense tragedy for them.”
Additionally, Maresca highlighted that it would ultimately be up to the mourning Pedro Neto to determine his availability for the clash against the Brazilians at Lincoln Financial Field following the devastating loss of his close international friend.
Neto missed Chelsea’s training session in Miami on Thursday morning, with Maresca stating that the player is under no obligation to participate against Palmeiras.
The Italian coach ensured that Neto will receive complete support and the freedom to make his own decision regarding playing.
“Regarding Pedro, it’s very upsetting, perhaps even more than just sad, but we’re here for Pedro to support him during this time,” he added.
“Ultimately, it’s entirely Pedro’s choice. I spoke to him this morning, and we are here for him. Whatever decision he makes will be the right one, and we will support him wholeheartedly.”
“Whether he plays tomorrow or not is not important. We’ll see how he feels, but regardless, we’ll be there for him.”
Liverpool also released a statement following the tragic loss of their striker, saying, “Liverpool Football Club is heartbroken by the untimely death of Diogo Jota.”
“The club has been notified that the 28-year-old has passed away following a road traffic incident in Spain along with his brother, Andre. Liverpool FC will not be providing any further comments at this time, and we kindly ask for privacy for Diogo and Andre’s family, friends, teammates, and staff as they cope with this unimaginable loss. We will continue to offer them our unwavering support.”
In a lasting tribute, the club announced it will retire Jota’s number 20 jersey, ensuring that no player will don it again, preserving his legacy for generations to come.
Jota amassed 49 caps for Portugal’s senior national team and played a pivotal role in their UEFA Nations League final victory over Spain in June.
