Isuzu UTE A-League icon Alessandro Diamanti has officially become one of our newest citizens after announcing that he has been granted Australian citizenship.
The ex-Western United star, who is currently leading the senior academy side at Melbourne City, shared a picture of his citizenship certificate on Instagram on Monday.
Diamanti touched down in Australia in 2019, stepping up as Western’s inaugural captain and quickly winning the hearts of Australian football fans with his extraordinary performances on the field and charismatic personality off it.
The 17-time Italian international has enjoyed a remarkable football career spanning 23 years across four nations, featuring in over 550 matches for club and country. He was awarded the Johnny Warren Medal, the Alex Tobin Medal, and named the club’s Player of the Season during his debut year in Australia.
Diamanti’s leadership played a crucial role at Western United as the club celebrated its first Isuzu UTE A-League Championship, coinciding with his retirement in 2023.
Overall, he made 81 appearances for Western United, netting 11 goals and providing 18 assists.

Since ending his playing career, Diamanti has embarked on a coaching journey in Australia, taking up a position with Melbourne City’s academy.
He joins the ranks of other international football stars who have made Australia their home and gained citizenship after concluding their careers in the A-Leagues, including Milos Ninkovic, Isaias, Marcelo Carrusca, Besart Berisha, Nick Montgomery, Terry McGlynn, Henrique, Cassio, Andy Keogh, Jean Carlos Solorzano, Jonatan Germano, Iacopa La Rocca, and Roy O’Donovan.
