Liverpool’s manager, Arne Slot, has described Diogo Jota as a “friend to everyone” following the tragic passing of the Portuguese international in a car accident on Thursday.
The 28-year-old lost his life, along with his younger brother Andre, when their car veered off a motorway in northern Spain and ignited.
Since joining the Reds in 2020, Jota netted 65 goals in 182 matches and was pivotal in helping Liverpool secure the Premier League title in Slot’s inaugural season at the helm earlier this year.
“When the moment is right, we will honour Diogo Jota, recall his goals, and sing his anthem,” stated Slot in an official comment.
“For now, we will cherish his memory as a remarkable individual and grieve his absence. He will remain unforgettable.”
Jota recently married his long-time partner, Rute Cardoso, who is also the mother of their three children, less than two weeks ago.
“My initial thoughts extend beyond my role as a football manager. They resonate as a father, son, brother, and uncle, directed towards the family of Diogo and Andre Silva, who have endured an inconceivable heartache,” Slot remarked.
“My message to them is unequivocal – you will never walk alone.
“The players, staff, and supporters of Liverpool Football Club stand united with you, and from what I have observed today, the broader football community shares in this solidarity.”
Having earned 49 caps for his nation, Jota was a beloved figure among Liverpool’s fanbase, who adorned Anfield Stadium with flowers, shirts, and flags in his memory.
“I could elaborate on all that he contributed to our team, but the reality is that anyone who witnessed Diogo play recognised it,” Slot explained.
“His dedication, determination, talent, and goals embodied what it means to be a Liverpool player.
“But there were aspects of him that not everyone witnessed. He was someone who never sought out fame but found it nonetheless. He wasn’t merely a friend to a few; he was a friend to all.
“He had the rare ability to uplift those around him simply by being in their presence. A person who held his family in the highest regard.”
